An interview of Emmanuel Picot, President, Evolis – January 2010

What is your assessment of year 2009 which showed great turbulence in the global economy?

Although 2009 was the very first year that EVOLIS posted a contracted level of activity, we were happy to see that EVOLIS’ business model was quite robust, even in those very tough times. However, EVOLIS’ presence in more than 100 countries, and in a variety of market segments, was key in helping us sail smoothly through those prevailing adverse conditions.

What plans have you implemented to face this crisis?

We decided to carry on with our investment in product development (release of 4 new products, overall), and to invest in our infrastructure (new ERP system and implementation of a supply chain platform in Singapore, scheduled to go live in 2010). We also strengthened our support to our distributors and tied strategic partnerships with selected suppliers.

According to you, what were the positive aspects of 2009?

Most of the European countries were badly hit by the economic crisis in 2009. Meanwhile, we also noticed buoyant developments in fast developing markets such as China, India and Brazil. We deployed appropriate strategies in these countries to tap their high-potential markets (opening of an office in China, strategic partnership in Brazil, etc.).

In 2009, what did you implement to overcome the tremendous price wars, coupled with the adverse €/$ exchange rates?

Product competition and pressure in prices were both strong in 2009. EVOLIS proved to be different by offering innovative products that provided our partners with value-based deals that helped them rise above whatever our competitors had to offer. We also implemented our cost containment efforts and improved upon our control of specific budgets.

On the manufacturing front, we streamlined our product design processes by using shared standardized parts. This enabled us to more effectively control certain avoidable expenses. In 2009, EVOLIS was able to implement effective synergies with selected outsourcers and suppliers. This industrial strategy will continue to bear fruit in the near future and will help us achieve a sourcing strategy that is even more focused on higher quality. This will also provide us with further flexibility which is a must with regard to our line of activity. This is how we will remain competitive in international markets, taking the lead over competitors that rely only on an Asia-based sourcing, and those who invoice in dollars.

What are your ambitions today, ten years after you created EVOLIS?

We are rather proud of our results with the cumulative growth, continuous innovation, dedicated teamwork and mutual successes which have been EVOLIS’ greatest achievements. The crisis also brought out some positive aspects, since it helped us identify some new areas of improvement. As EVOLIS will shortly turn 10, our objective is to get ourselves back on the track of growth, revitalization and dynamism, giving birth to ambitious corporate goals for the forthcoming 5 years.
